Frequently Asked Questions
Use caution when hiring companies that advertise discounted nationwide services. They often sub-contract with unlicensed companies at unmotivating low prices.
We hope this helps answer your questions, but please call either way: 214-914-0801
Do you price match? Yes. We will beat or match any verifiable and reasonable rate that another licensed agency quotes you. Please call for details.
Is following someone legal? Absolutely. It is legal to shoot video of someone in any public space too.
Do you subcontract services? Unlike many companies that advertise online, we conduct all investigations ourselves. In rare circumstances, and when in the best interest of our clients, we assign work to another fully-licensed investigator who has been vetted by our agency. An example is in time-critical situations or when an investigator of another race or gender would yield better surveillance results.
Does a company need an investigation license? Yes. According to the laws governing private security and investigation in the State of Texas, a company must have a valid license. This license guarantees that the company has met the training and insurance requirements. If you hire an individual who is not licensed, the information he or she obtains may not be admitted to a court of law. Covert's license number is C-10745. You can verify a license through the Texas Department of Public Safety. If a company will not provide you with the license number of the field investigator assigned to your case, they are in violation of the rules and regulations of the Texas Private Investigation Bureau (TPIB). You can file a complaint by downloading form PB-22.
Can I tap a phone? No. But in Texas, and many other states, you may record a conversation without another's consent if you are a participant in the conversation.
Can I put hidden cameras in my home? You may put a hidden camera, GPS unit, or recorder in or on any property that you own. Make sure your name is on the title and registration of the property or you will be held liable for an illegal tap. Also, while you may record in shared household spaces, you may not record in areas of the home where someone would have reasonable expectation of privacy.
What is a retainer and why do you require one? A retainer works like a debit account. You give us money to guarantee payment and to initiate a valid contract. We work and deduct the money you have on your account. Any remaining money left in your retainer at the conclusion of the investigation will be returned to you.
Is the information you collect admissible in a court of law? Yes. We will give you the proper documentation, and we will attend a hearing if you request.
Will I get a copy of the video tape and report? Yes, we give you a copy of the video and report in the formats that you request.
Will you keep my information? At the conclusion of an investigation we return all photographs and materials to you. We typically only keep a contract on file once a job is completed. This guarantees that your confidentiality is protected.
What information do I need to provide? At the beginning of an investigation, we recommend that you give us as much information as possible. Try to collect photographs, vehicle descriptions, license plate numbers, potential people the person may come in contact with, and so on. The more information you can provide us, the better chances we will have at receiving positive results at the lowest price.
Do you practice corporate social responsibility? We are a local company, dedicated to our community. We donate to local charities and events. We follow all laws and act ethically. Use caution when hiring nationwide corporations. They often sub-contract with companies who do not operate legally.
Do you suspect that a company is acting irresponsibly? We help private individuals and non-profit groups dedicated to issues of social justice hold corporations accountable. We have helped groups stop the illegal practices of their competitors and have held companies accountable for personal injuries and work-related deaths. Call today to discuss your individual case: 214-914-0803.
How do you compare to Nationwide Companies advertising on Google? These companies usually are not licensed in Texas and will charge higher prices for the investigative service. They then subcontract to another investigator in Texas at a lower rate so that they can make a profit. In some circumstances, the subcontracting companies have expired licenses, are not insured, may have been suspended by the State of Texas for violation of law, or may be unlicensed. If you do hire nationwide subcontracting company, ask for the name of the investigator who will be handling the case and get his or her direct phone number. The nationwide company is required by law to provide this information. By contracting with covert, you get a direct line to the primary investigator of your case and a reasonable price. Covert Investigations is local to the DFW Metroplex and our company license number is C-10745. When hiring us for out-of-state work, we follow the appropriate laws of the state where our work is conducted.
